Hamilton’s empire

Virtuoso bandolinista trots the globe.

One of the shining lights of the contemporary choro world, 29-year old Hamilton de Holanda has been playing the bandolim since he was five. In 1981, he formed with his guitarist brother, Fernando Cesar, the duo Dois de Ouro, which made its public debut that year at the Clube do Choro de Brasília.

Since then, Hamilton has been winning prestigious awards and releasing records. With his brother, he recorded Destroçando a Macaxeira (1997) and A Nova Cara do Velho Choro (1998). Listen to audio samples from these discs at musicexpress.com.br.

With guitar legend Marco Pereira, Hamilton collaborated on Luz das Cordas (2000). In 1999, he formed the trio Brasília Brasil with his guitarist friends Daniel Santiago e Rogério Caetano. The trio’s CD Abre Alas was released on Velas in 2000.

Hamilton’s solo CDs are Hamilton de Holanda (2002) and Música das Nuvens e do Chão (2004). His latest, A Música de Hamilton de Holanda (pictured above), is a collection of all the musician’s own compositions recorded by himself.

The bandolinista has been traveling a great deal this year. He appeared in France as part of that country’s Year of Brazil festivities. This month he’ll be one of the instructors in the California Brazil Camp, running from 28 August to 3 September. While he’s here, Hamilton will appear with mandolinist Mike Marshall at the Freight and Salvage, 1111 Addison Street in Berkeley on Tuesday, 6 September 2005. Doors open at 7:30 pm, music begins at 8:00 pm. Advance tickets: $17.50.
