Sérgio Santos and Marcus Tardelli at Spoleto USA
This years edition of the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, SC will take place between 26 May and 11 June. In what has become a tradition in recent years, the Wachovia Jazz series of the festival showcases outstanding Brazilian talent.
Sérgio Santos, who last played California with Joyce in 1999, will be appearing with Joyces band. The festivals programmer assures me that Joyce isnt scheduled to make a surprise appearance, but just between us chickens. I wouldn't rule it out.
Sérgio is not only an excellent singer and guitarist but a talented songwriter, whose most constant lyricist is the great Paulo Cesar Pinheiro. The superb band is likely to lend the pairs songs a jazzy flavor.

Guitarist Marcus Tardelli was a member of the acclaimed Quarteto Maogani (see reviews of their CDs Cordas Cruzadas and Água de Beber). Last year he left the group for a solo career. A talk with Maoganis guru, Guinga, gave birth to Tardellis all-Guinga debut album, Unha & Carne (the literal meaning is fingernail and flesh; figuratively it means hand-in-glove).
Guinga has been an avowed Maogani fan for years, and in his customary effusiveness he states, I regard him as my son and, at the same time, as the father of my songs. Tardelli is the greatest guitarist ever born in Brazil. He is technically perfect. I think that there are no insurmountable barriers for him when he decides to render the most difficult interpretation.
The composers confidence in Tardelli is so deep that he abandoned his own plan for a solo guitar CD and co-produced Unha & Carne instead (thats his back in the photo). The results are nothing short of spectacular and include several previously unrecorded Guinga tunes (see track list in the Guinga discography).
