More Praça Onze songs

Praça Onze by Augusto Malta, 1911

I’m fortunate in having collaborators like Dijalma M. Candido, who generously shares treasures from his 78-rpm disc collection.

Recently Dijalma sent me recordings, lyrics, and label images for ten 1930s and ’40s songs that mention Praça Onze (these on top of all those he’d sent in the past). Thanks to his contributions, parts one, two, and three of Praça Onze in Popular Song have been greatly expanded.

The songs may be heard in streaming format on the Instituto Moreira Salles website. Simply enter a song’s title into the search field.

Daniella,

The picture of Praça Onze reminded me of my most recent trip to Rio, during which I went looking for this scene. I got off the metro at the Praça Onze stop, and wandered around looking for some monument or plaque recognizing this important site in Rio's musical history, but couldnt find any reference to it. Does the scene depicted still exist there? Is there any indication of what once happened in this area?

MJ,

Read parts 1 and 2 of Praça Onze in Popular Song, and you'll discover what happened to the square.

Que pena. I'll have to settle for having been to the Sambodroma.
