Acervo do Hermínio

A precious collection transformed into a blog.

Hermínio Bello de Carvalho is a national treasure.

Over the course of his long career as cultural producer and creator—a career fully documented in Alexandre Pavan’s new book Timoneiro: Perfil Biográfico de Hermínio Bello de Carvalho—Hermínio amassed an archive of precious mementos, both printed and recorded.

This archive is the basis of a new weblog published by Alexandre Pavan, Jacira Berlinck, Luiz Boal, Luiz Ribeiro, and Tatiana Maciel. The group is responsible for organizing and digitalizing Hermínio’s treasures and offering them gratis to the world.

Titled Acervo Hermínio Bello de Carvalho, the blog will follow its namesake’s career with texts, images, and sounds. The first posts are up, and you can enjoy rarities such as pages from the legendary Rosa de Ouro program signed by the equally legendary performers and a private 1970 interview with the songwriter Valzinho, complete with a recording of “Doce Veneno,” which several years later would become the title song of the tribute album produced by Hermínio and sung by Zezé Gonzaga.

My thanks to Sheila Thomson of Maria-Brazil for the tip.

An unlikely duo

Marcos Sacramento & Guinga perform together.

Teatro Rival, 24 January 2007

Photo: David Heymann, 2004

Last Saturday, the radio program Sala de Música at CBN FM and AM in São Paulo aired two musical interviews back to back. First came Marcos Sacramento, who had given a show at Sesc Pompeia to launch Sacramentos. He was followed by Guinga, also in Sampa to launch Casa de Villa.

While the two were in the studio, they took the opportunity to do what they’ve never done before: perform together. The song Marcos sang to Guinga’s guitar accompaniment was the waltz “Por Ti,” recorded by Orlando Silva in 1939. Guinga even cracked a joke about “Sá Róris & Guarabyra” (a reference to Sá, Rodrix & Guarabyra).

Feliz levando a tua imagem no meu coração
Meu canto que é o gemido triste do meu coração

The interviews are archived. Here’s how you can hear them. In CBN, scroll down to the search field in the right-hand bar (Arquivo CBN - Busca), type the key word Sacramento, and hit OK. You’ll get three links. The first part is Sacramento, the third Guinga, and the second evenly divided between the two. The two perform together in the middle of the second part.

If you understand Portuguese, it’s worthwhile listening to both interviews in their entirety, since both artists talk at length about their musical careers and influences.
